GuideCareer Branding
What is career branding?
A plain-language guide to how you are known professionally, and how to shape it.
In short
Career branding is the deliberate practice of deciding how you want to be known professionally, then expressing it consistently across your resume, LinkedIn profile, biography and conversations, so the right decision-makers understand your value quickly. It is positioning, not decoration: a clear promise, backed by evidence, told the same way everywhere.
01The Basics
What is career branding, in plain terms?
Your career brand is what people believe about your professional value when you are not in the room. They form that belief from what they can find and read: your resume, your LinkedIn profile, your biography, what colleagues say and what you have published. Career branding is the work of shaping that belief on purpose instead of leaving it to chance. It has three parts.
01
Positioning
A clear promise: who you are, what you do best and who needs it. Positioning is a choice, not a summary of everything you have done.
02
Proof
Evidence that the promise is true: results, scope, numbers and outcomes, in place of adjectives such as strategic or results-driven.
03
Presence
The places the right people meet you: your resume, LinkedIn profile, biography, website, conversations and the events where you show up.
02Related Ideas
How is career branding different from personal branding?
Personal branding is the wider idea: your public identity, the audience you build and the content you share. Career branding is narrower and more practical. It focuses on how you are chosen for roles, promotions, boards and engagements, and it is built on evidence such as results and scope more than on audience or style. The two overlap, and personal branding for executives usually starts with getting the career story right.
03Why It Matters
Why does career branding matter for executives?
Senior hiring decisions are made from short reads. A recruiter checks your LinkedIn profile after your resume. A board reads your biography before it meets you. An interview panel tests the claims in both. When each document makes the same case, you become easy to believe. When they disagree, or say only that you are experienced, you become easy to skip.
That is why TalentScript treats the documents as one system, not separate products. Read about how the agency works.

06Getting Started
How do I start building my career brand?
Decide what you are aiming at.
Name the role, level and kind of organization you want next. A brand aimed at everything persuades no one.
Find out what is said about you now.
Search your own name, read your LinkedIn profile as a stranger would, and ask two colleagues what you are known for.
Collect your proof.
List the results you drove, with numbers and scope, for each of your last few roles. This is the raw material for every document.
Write one story and tell it everywhere.
Your resume, LinkedIn profile and biography should make the same case in the voice that suits each. Recruiters check one against the other.
Be visible to the right people.
Build the connections, and go to the conversations and events, where decision-makers in your field already are.
07Reverse Recruiting
What is reverse recruiting, and how does it relate to career branding?
Reverse recruiting is a job search service in which a career partner works on the candidate's side, finding suitable roles and approaching employers on their behalf. It only works well when the candidate's story is already clear, which is why career branding comes first. TalentScript's founder, John Gbolahan, has more than a decade of experience in both. See Career Access for how that support works.
08Frequently Asked
Common questions about career branding
No. Every career level benefits, because at every level someone is deciding quickly whether you are the right person. What changes is the question being asked. An entry-level candidate is asked whether they can learn fast and deliver, and a board candidate is asked whether they can guide from above. TalentScript works across all ten career levels.
A resume is one document written for one application. A career brand is the underlying story and evidence that every document, profile and conversation draws from. The resume is one place the brand shows up, and it works much harder when it matches everything else a reader finds.
You do not need one to start, but for senior professionals, consultants and speakers a personal website is one of the strongest signals available. It is always on, fully in your control and cannot be mistaken for anyone else's. It is included in TalentScript's Standard and Premium packages as the Executive Portfolio Website.
Yes. Opportunities such as board invitations, speaking requests, promotions and recruiter approaches tend to arrive when your professional story is already clear and visible. Building it before you need it means you are not starting from a standing stop when you do.
No, and any provider that says otherwise is not being straight with you. Nobody can guarantee another organization's hiring decision. Career branding improves what is in your control: how you are positioned, how well you are prepared and how visible you are to the people who decide.
